About the writer...

Raúl Germano Brandão was a Portuguese soldier, journalist and writer.

The street where he was born in Porto and the Municipal Library of Guimarães are now named after him.

After attending the Higher Course of Letters, Raul Brandão entered the military career in 1888, from which he retired in 1911, since writing was his true vocation. As a descendant of fishermen and his childhood spent in the fishing area of ​​Foz do Douro, the theme of the sea and nature was recurrent in Brandão's works. Other themes include pain, travel, dreams, and poverty.

Raúl Brandão published short stories, travel books, plays and historical studies

Some of his main works:

Os pobres (1900);
Húmus (1917);
Os pescadores (1923);
As ilhas desconhecidas (1927).
