Fernando Pessoa (1888-1935) was one of the most important poets in the Portuguese language and a central figure of Portuguese Modernism. As a lyrical and nationalist poet, he cultivated a poetry focused on the traditional themes of Portugal as well as a nostalgic lyricism, which expresses reflections on his “deep self”, his concerns, his loneliness and his boredom.
Fernando Pessoa was several poets/persons at the same time, creating heteronyms of poets/writers with their own personalities who wrote his poetry; Alberto Caeiro, Álvaro de Campos and Ricardo Reis, were the most notable.
