MEET THE ARTIST AMADEU DE SOUZA-CARDOSO…

Amadeu de Souza-Cardoso was the main artist of Portuguese Modernism.

He began his artistic career in Lisbon, where he studied “Architecture”, at the Academia de Belas-Artes; but, bored with the daily life of the capital and disillusioned with academicism, the lack of originality, and the preconceived ideas of the academy, he left for Paris, where he continued his studies.

Paris, the center of modern art and avant-garde ideas, was the city that awakened the modern artist, leaving architecture aside.

His short life was enough to create an extensive, revolutionary, and unique work. Amadeu de Souza-Cardoso was considered by many to be "the first discovery of Portugal in Europe in the 20th century".

Some of his main works:

Cafés de Paris;
Saint du Lapin;
Paris café – jeu de cartes;
Portrait of Alexandre Ferraz de Andrade.

Artistic currents: Cubism, Expressionism, Modern Art, Abstractionism, Impressionism, Futurism, Modernism.

"Art, as I feel it, is the emotional product of nature, source of life, sensitivity, color, depth, mental action and emotional power." – Amadeu de Souza-Cardoso
